The New Orleans Saints' quarterback competition just took a sharp turn.

What was shaping up to be a wide-open, four-man race to replace the recently retired Derek Carr is now down to three—for now. Second-year quarterback Jake Haener will be sidelined for the next few weeks after suffering an oblique strain during Wednesday’s Organized Team Activities (OTAs), according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The injury, which required an MRI but will not need surgery, is expected to keep Haener out for the remainder of OTAs. However, he’s anticipated to be back in action by the start of training camp in mid-July.

Haener's absence marks a setback in his quest to earn the starting job. The 26-year-old former Fresno State standout was drafted in the fourth round in 2023 and spent most of last season as the Saints' third-string quarterback. He saw limited action across eight games, throwing for 226 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while completing 46.2% of his passes. His lone start, in Week 15 against the Washington Commanders, ended with a halftime benching after a rough 4-for-10 outing for 49 yards and a pick. Spencer Rattler took over and nearly led a comeback, orchestrating four second-half scoring drives in a narrow 20-19 loss.

Haener’s injury puts added focus on the remaining contenders. Spencer Rattler, a 2024 fifth-round pick, now finds himself with an edge in reps and experience. He impressed late last season filling in for an injured Carr, showing poise and mobility that caught the coaching staff’s attention.

Also in the mix are a pair of rookies: Tyler Shough, the No. 40 overall selection in this year’s draft, and undrafted signee Hunter Dekkers. Both bring upside but remain largely untested at the NFL level.

The starting job opened unexpectedly earlier this month when Carr, an 11-year NFL veteran, announced his retirement following a shoulder injury. Carr, who spent the final two seasons of his career in New Orleans, posted a 14-13 record as the Saints' starter.

As the Saints look to move forward post-Carr, the quarterback race remains fluid—but for now, Jake Haener is watching from the sidelines, hoping his shot at redemption arrives when training camp opens in July.
