New Orleans Saints wide receiver Bub Means (16) catches a touchdown pass against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Saints might have a hidden gem in wide receiver Bub Means, and it's starting to look like the team is banking on him to fill a significant void left since Michael Thomas's departure in 2023.
Standing at 6'2", Bub Means is one of the tallest receivers in the Saints' locker room. His stature is reminiscent of Michael Thomas, who was known for his ability to outmuscle defenders and make contested catches. Since Thomas's exit, the Saints have relied on speedy receivers like Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and the recently re-signed Brandin Cooks. While these players bring agility and quickness, they lack the physical presence that a taller receiver offers, especially in red-zone situations.
Historically, taller receivers have provided quarterbacks with reliable targets, especially when the passing windows are tight. Players like Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, and Mike Evans have demonstrated how size can be a game-changer. Michael Thomas himself was a prime example during his tenure with the Saints, consistently using his frame to shield defenders and secure catches.
Bub Means, a product of the University of Pittsburgh, showcased his potential during the 2024 season. He appeared in seven games, recording nine receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown. His opportunities arose primarily due to injuries to key players like Olave and Shaheed. Unfortunately, Means also battled injuries, eventually landing on injured reserve on November 2, 2024.
Despite limited action, scouting reports highlight Means's strengths:
Impressive height and wingspan, providing a large catch radius.
Quick off the line, allowing him to beat press coverage.
Ability to accelerate, creating separation downfield.
Strong hands, capable of securing high throws over defenders.
Speed after the catch, making him a threat on short routes.
What's intriguing is the Saints' approach this offseason. They haven't made significant moves in free agency or the draft to acquire a big-bodied receiver. This could indicate their confidence in Means's development and potential to fill that role.
It's worth noting that several experienced receivers are still available in free agency, including Keenan Allen, who has familiarity with Saints' new head coach Kellen Moore from their time with the Chargers. Moore served as the Chargers' offensive coordinator in 2023, while Brandon Staley, now the Saints' defensive coordinator, was the head coach during that period. Other notable free agents include Amari Cooper, DJ Chark, and Tyler Boyd.
Additionally, the Jacksonville Jaguars recently released Gabe Davis, who previously made a name for himself with the Buffalo Bills. Davis's experience and size could make him an attractive option for teams seeking a physical receiver.
The Saints seem to be placing their bets on Bub Means to step up and become the physical presence they've been missing. If he can stay healthy and build on his flashes from last season, Means could be a key contributor in the Saints' offense for 2025.
